To the thrill of large crowds below, Discovery made several passes over the Washington, DC area between 10:00 and 11:00 am on April 17 before landing safely at Washington-Dulles International Airport.

Approximately 10:40am: This was the second (of three) fly-overs over Dulles Airport on April 17, 2012. We listened to the Control Tower as they talked the 747 down. Upon final approach, the follow-plane was said to be low on fuel and happy to be landing, since a second fly-over at approximately 2500-3000 feet was not previously planned. The shuttle and 747 landed on it’s final third approach. I could smell the rubber from the braking tires of the 747 within 90 seconds after landing from my vantage point across Rt 28 in Herndon, VA
