Duet is the first app that allows you to use your iDevice as an extra display for your Mac using the Lightning or 30-pin cable.  Duet is made by a team of ex-Apple engineers. The Mac software is free, though the iPad software to allow the dual Duet display is $9.99 via the Apple store.  But hey, for under $10, you gain a second monitor to increase your productivity and allow you more viewing real estate!
